Upgrading from Previous Releases
================================
If you are upgrading to Release 2.2.1 from a previous
version of NetShield, please follow these recommendations.
Before installing NetShield, check for existing copies of NetShield
and delete or rename them. Failure to perform this step may cause
problems resulting in incorrect version display or server failures.
1. Backup your existing NetShield installation. For example:
COPY <existing directory>\NETSHLD.NLM <backup directory>
COPY <existing directory>\*.DAT <backup directory>
2. Validate the program and data files. See VALIDATE.TXT and
PACKING.LST for details.
3. Copy the new files into the SYS:\SYSTEM directory of your
file server.
Viewing the Manuals
===================
NetShield now ships its manuals electronically and can be viewed using the
Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Adobe Acrobat Reader allows the users to view the
documentation on-screen as well as print out as much or as little of the
documentation they wish. Other features of the Adobe Acrobat Reader include
commands such as: cut, copy, paste, find and zoom.
Use the following procedure to view your electronic documentation.
1. Install NetShield.
For further information regarding the installation of NetShield, refer to
INSTALL.TXT.
2. Install the Adobe Acrobat Reader by double-clicking on ACROREAD.EXE
from within File Manager.
3. Locate the manual files.
Default location is C:\MCAFEE\NETSHLD\NS220.PDF
The manual file for NetShield is:
NS220.PDF Title: Using NetShield CD and Disk
4. Launch the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
5. Choose File | Open.
The Open dialog box is displayed.
6. Browse for the desired manual and choose OK.
NOTE: The combined size of the NetShield documentation uncompressed can be
as large as 1 MG. Ensure that there is sufficient space available before
copying the files. The files do not have to reside in the same directory as
the Adobe Acrobat Reader and it is recommended that CD users access the
files from the CD drive when needed.

Required NetWare Patches
========================
LIBUP4.EXE - NOVELL SUPPLIED PATCHES
------------------------------------
NetShield requires the following Netware Patch files for
NetWare 3.11 and 3.12. These files may be found in the Novell
Supplied file LIBUP4.EXE.
A3112.NLM - NetWare 3.x NUT Compatibility Support v4.10a
AFTER311.NLM - NetWare 3.x locale Compatibility Support v4.10a
CLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Library v3.12h
NWSNUT.NLM - NetWare NLM Utility User Interface v4.10g
MATHLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (387 support) v3.12h
-- or --
MATHLIBC.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (fp calls) v3.12h
NetShield requires the following Netware Patch files for Netware 4.x:
-----------
CLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Library 4.10
MATHLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (387 support) v4.10
-- or --
MATHLIBC.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (fp calls) v4.10
STRLT3.EXE - NOVELL SUPPLIED PATCHES
------------------------------------
Problems with NetWares ability to release some areas of short term
memory cause NetWare to occasionally issue short term memory allocation
messages when running NetShield. A Novell supplied file, SPXS.NLM as
supplied in STRTL3.EXE will provide a work around for this problem.
STRTL3.EXE also contains additional patches which are recommended for
NetShield. NetWare 3.12 users should apply SPXDDFIX.NLM. NetWare 3.11
users should apply SPXFIX2.NLM.
New Features in NetShield
=========================
MACRO VIRUS DETECTION
---------------------
A self-extracting archive called MVTOOL10.EXE is included with this
release. This file is being distributed by Microsoft to protect
against the Concept virus, as well as to warn you against document
files that contain macros without your knowledge.
To make use of it, execute:
MVTOOL10.EXE 40732 bytes
It will create these files:
README.DOC 36864 10-02-95 1:08p
SCANPROT.DOT 49152 10-02-95 3:44p
Enter Word and read the README.DOC to see if the package is suitable
for your environment.
ON-ACCESS EXTENSION LIST
------------------------
NetShield now contains a user-configurable list of program file
extensions for real-time scanning. On-access scanning now honors a list
of six default extensions. Users can add or remove file extensions from a
SCANNED EXTENSION LIST. This list is enabled by default. SCANNING OF
ALL FILES CAN STILL BE ACHIEVED BY DISABLING THIS FEATURE.
This feature was added to reduce file sharing conflicts, increase
performance, and avoid unnecessary scanning of data files.
From NetShields main menu choose CONFIGURE SCANNING MODE and choose
ON ACCESS SCANNING followed by EDIT SCANNED EXTENSION LIST.
USER ALARMS
-----------
User alarms are now configurable with a Minimum Message Interval (MMI)
A configurable default of 5 minutes is used to space NetShield broadcast
alerts. This feature was implemented in an effort to avoid "broadcast
storms." The default interval for user alarms is not saved when a
configuration is saved to disk.
MHS MAIL FORMAT
---------------
SMF-70 messaging support has been added to incorporate additional mail
standards into NetShields MHS feature.
Issues in This Release
======================
ISSUE: Occasionally the Windows Console was unable to connect to
servers running NetShield.
SOLUTION: IPXS.NLM needs to be loaded at the file server console to
provide a necessary communications layer. IPXS.NLM is now
autoloaded.
ISSUE: Copying files with On Access Scanning enabled and the
extension list disabled revealed that in some cases
NetShield was not scanning all files.
SOLUTION: Check extension code in On Access Scanning is fixed.
ISSUE: Copying a particular file with On Access scanning
enabled would abend server.
SOLUTION: Bug was traced down to a problem in Novell file seek.
A workaround was placed in the scan engine.
ISSUE: NetShield was not scanning files in directories with extensions.
SOLUTION: Fixed.
ISSUE: Volume and Periodic scan were scanning only program file
extensions.
SOLUTION: Fixed. Volume and Periodic scan now scan all files.
ISSUE: During an Outbound file copy, files were being internally
scanned twice.
SOLUTION: Fixed.
ISSUE: On Access fields in the scanning statistics <F10> screen
was not displaying all files being analyzed.
SOLUTION: Fixed.
ISSUE: On Access display for last virus detected did not update
until a subsequent file was copied inbound.
ISSUE: Customers reports of abend with P_TIME as the final running
process
SOLUTION: NetShield was using 8K stack for Periodic Scanning and 32K
for Immediate Scanning. The Periodic Scan stack was increased.
ISSUE: Problem with display information and file scanned counter in
on-access scanning status screen
SOLUTION: Fixed to update the screen and file counter to report only files
that are scanned or analyzed.
ISSUE: Directory exclusions were not being updated while a scan was
in progress.
SOLUTION: Exclusions can not be changed/updated when scans are in progress.
Implemented new 2.2.7 scan engine
Miscellenous bug fixes for Novell Certification.
Additional Information
======================
MATHLIBC.NLM
------------
Compatibility issues with the existence of MATHLIB.NLM and other third
party NLMs have prompted a change to the support NLMs that NetShield loads.
MATHLIBC.NLM is now used.
SHARING VIOLATIONS
------------------
If SHARING VIOLATION or ACCESS DENIED messages are experienced try
loading the MSDOS SHARE.EXE driver from your autoexec.bat.
SHARE can be found in the \DOS directory. Otherwise, check the file
in question for a READ-ONLY file attribute and change it to READ-WRITE.
TO WRITE/PRINT CONFIGURATION DATA
---------------------------------
Under CONFIGURATION FILE MANAGEMENT OPTIONS, choosing:
WRITE CONFIGURATION REPORT TO FILE
or PRINT CURRENT CONFIGURATION SETTINGS
will write/print NetShields configuration information from the
NetShield settings file, VIR$CFG.DAT.
To obtain an accurate configuration report, first choose:
SAVE CONFIGURATION SETTINGS TO FILE followed by
WRITE CONFIGURATION REPORT TO FILE
or PRINT CURRENT CONFIGURATION SETTINGS
WINDOWS CONSOLE ISSUES
----------------------
Although the NetShield Windows Console appears to work correctly in
Windows 95, McAfee has not fully tested the program in that environment
and makes no claim that it is 100% compatible with Windows 95.
CONFIGURING GLOBAL MHS
----------------------
In order for NetShield 2.2 to operate with Global MHS, add the following
entry to the NGM.CFG file for the MHS server:
[MGMSMF]
sender-validation-enabled=FALSE
NETWARE SFT-III
---------------
On-Access scanning is NOT SUPPORTED on SFT-III 3.11. Due to the nature of
the 3.11 system it is not possible for NetShield to install the
appropriate system hooks. SFT-III 3.11 is a Novell 3.x series product and
as such will not be further supported by Novell.
On-Access scanning IS FULLY SUPPORTED on SFT-III 4.x.
If executing NETSHLD.NLM on a Novell SFT-III server, be sure to execute
on the MS engine and NOT on the I/O engine.
NetShields paging feature is not compatible with NetWare SFT-III since
SFT-III does not mirror the serial port.
USER LIST ON NOVELL 4.01
------------------------
Due to some inconsistencies in the Netware 4.01 release NetShield is not
able to access user lists from servers running this version. It is
recommended that you upgrade your systems to any later version of
Netware.
MOVING OUTBOUND FILES TO QUARANTINE DIRECTORY
---------------------------------------------
Outbound infected files are NOT moved to the quarantine directory. The
files are, however, blocked from being copied. It is recommended that
periodic scans of server volumes be performed in order to detect
infected files.
Known Bugs in This Release
==========================
VOLUME SCAN DIALOG
------------------
If no volumes on a server have previously selected for scanning the Volume
Scan Dialog does not default select the first volume in the list. When
this occurs the Start Scan button is enabled if it is pressed before a
volume has been selected nothing will happen. Be sure to select a volume
to scan before pressing the Start Scan button.
DEFAULT INTERVAL
----------------
The default interval for user alarms is not saved when a configuration
is saved to disk.
R/O FILE ATTRIBUTES
-------------------
NetShield will not load if the files NAMES.DAT and/or SCAN.DAT
are read only. If necessary, use the DOS command ATTRIB to
remedy the problem. Example:
attrib -r names.dat
attrib -r scan.dat
