  24. Upgrading from Previous Releases
  25. ================================
  26. If you are upgrading to Release 2.2.1 from a previous
  27. version of NetShield, please follow these recommendations.
  28.  
  29. Before installing NetShield, check for existing copies of NetShield
  30. and delete or rename them. Failure to perform this step may cause
  31. problems resulting in incorrect version display or server failures.
  32.  
  33. 1.  Backup your existing NetShield installation.  For example:
  34.  
  35.      COPY <existing directory>\NETSHLD.NLM <backup directory>
  36.      COPY <existing directory>\*.DAT <backup directory>
  37.  
  38. 2.  Validate the program and data files.  See VALIDATE.TXT and
  39.     PACKING.LST for details.
  40.  
  41. 3.  Copy the new files into the SYS:\SYSTEM directory of your 
  42.     file server.  
  43.  
  44.  
  45. Viewing the Manuals
  46. ===================
  47. NetShield now ships its manuals electronically and can be viewed using the 
  48. Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Adobe Acrobat Reader allows the users to view the 
  49. documentation on-screen as well as print out as much or as little of the 
  50. documentation they wish. Other features of the Adobe Acrobat Reader include 
  51. commands such as: cut, copy, paste, find and zoom.
  52.  
  53. Use the following procedure to view your electronic documentation.
  54.  
  55. 1.      Install NetShield.
  56.  
  57. For further information regarding the installation of NetShield, refer to 
  58. INSTALL.TXT.
  59.  
  60. 2.      Install the Adobe Acrobat Reader by double-clicking on ACROREAD.EXE 
  61.     from within File Manager.
  62.  
  63. 3.      Locate the manual files. 
  64.     Default location is C:\MCAFEE\NETSHLD\NS220.PDF
  65.  
  66.    The manual file for NetShield is:

  70. 4.      Launch the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  71.  
  72. 5.      Choose File | Open.

  74. The Open dialog box is displayed.

  76. 6.      Browse for the desired manual and choose OK.

  78. NOTE: The combined size of the NetShield documentation uncompressed can be
  79. as large as 1 MG. Ensure that there is sufficient space available before 
  80. copying the files. The files do not have to reside in the same directory as
  81. the Adobe Acrobat Reader and it is recommended that CD users access the 
  82. files from the CD drive when needed.

  156. STRLT3.EXE - NOVELL SUPPLIED PATCHES
  157. ------------------------------------
  158.   Problems with NetWares ability to release some areas of short term 
  159.   memory cause NetWare to occasionally issue short term memory allocation 
  160.   messages when running NetShield. A Novell supplied file, SPXS.NLM as
  161.   supplied in STRTL3.EXE will provide a work around for this problem.
  162.  
  163.   STRTL3.EXE also contains additional patches which are recommended for 
  164.   NetShield. NetWare 3.12 users should apply SPXDDFIX.NLM. NetWare 3.11 
  165.   users should apply SPXFIX2.NLM.

  169. New Features in NetShield
  170. =========================
  171. MACRO VIRUS DETECTION
  172. ---------------------
  173. A self-extracting archive called MVTOOL10.EXE is included with this 
  174. release. This file is being distributed by Microsoft to protect 
  175. against the Concept virus, as well as to warn you against document 
  176. files that contain macros without your knowledge.
  177.  
  178. To make use of it, execute:
  179.

  187. Enter Word and read the README.DOC to see if the package is suitable
  188. for your environment.

  190. ON-ACCESS EXTENSION LIST
  191. ------------------------
  192.   NetShield now contains a user-configurable list of program file
  193.   extensions for real-time scanning. On-access scanning now honors a list 
  194.   of six default extensions. Users can add or remove file extensions from a 
  195.   SCANNED EXTENSION LIST. This list is enabled by default. SCANNING OF
  196.   ALL FILES CAN STILL BE ACHIEVED BY DISABLING THIS FEATURE.
  197.   This feature was added to reduce file sharing conflicts, increase 
  198.   performance, and avoid unnecessary scanning of data files. 
  199.  
  200.   From NetShields main menu choose CONFIGURE SCANNING MODE and choose 
  201.   ON ACCESS SCANNING followed by EDIT SCANNED EXTENSION LIST.
  202.   
  203. USER ALARMS
  204. -----------              
  205.   User alarms are now configurable with a Minimum Message Interval (MMI) 
  206.   A configurable default of 5 minutes is used to space NetShield broadcast 
  207.   alerts. This feature was implemented in an effort to avoid "broadcast 
  208.   storms." The default interval for user alarms is not saved when a 
  209.   configuration is saved to disk.

  212. MHS MAIL FORMAT
  213. ---------------
  214.   SMF-70 messaging support has been added to incorporate additional mail 
  215.   standards into NetShields MHS feature.
  216.  
  217.  
  218. Issues in This Release
  219. ======================
  220.  
  221. ISSUE:    Occasionally the Windows Console was unable to connect to 
  222.       servers running NetShield.
  223. SOLUTION: IPXS.NLM needs to be loaded at the file server console to
  224.       provide a necessary communications layer. IPXS.NLM is now 
  225.       autoloaded. 
  226.  
  227. ISSUE:    Copying files with On Access Scanning enabled and the 
  228.       extension list disabled revealed that in some cases
  229.       NetShield was not scanning all files. 
  230. SOLUTION: Check extension code in On Access Scanning is fixed.
  231.  
  232. ISSUE:    Copying a particular file with On Access scanning
  233.       enabled would abend server.
  234. SOLUTION: Bug was traced down to a problem in Novell file seek.
  235.       A workaround was placed in the scan engine.
  236.  
  237. ISSUE:    NetShield was not scanning files in directories with extensions.
  238. SOLUTION: Fixed.
  239.  
  240. ISSUE:    Volume and Periodic scan were scanning only program file 
  241.       extensions.
  242. SOLUTION: Fixed. Volume and Periodic scan now scan all files.
  243.  
  244. ISSUE:    During an Outbound file copy, files were being internally
  245.       scanned twice.
  246. SOLUTION: Fixed.
  247.  
  248. ISSUE:    On Access fields in the scanning statistics <F10> screen 
  249.       was not displaying all files being analyzed. 
  250. SOLUTION: Fixed.          
  251.  
  252. ISSUE:    On Access display for last virus detected did not update
  253.       until a subsequent file was copied inbound. 
  254.  
  255. ISSUE:    Customers reports of abend with P_TIME as the final running 
  256.       process
  257. SOLUTION: NetShield was using 8K stack for Periodic Scanning and 32K 
  258.       for Immediate Scanning. The Periodic Scan stack was increased.
  259.  
  260. ISSUE:    Problem with display information and file scanned counter in 
  261.       on-access scanning status screen
  262. SOLUTION: Fixed to update the screen and file counter to report only files  
  263.       that are scanned or analyzed. 
  264.  
  265. ISSUE:    Directory exclusions were not being updated while a scan was
  266.       in progress.
  267. SOLUTION: Exclusions can not be changed/updated when scans are in progress.
  268.  
  269. Implemented new 2.2.7 scan engine
  270.  
  271. Miscellenous bug fixes for Novell Certification.

  273.  
  274. Additional Information
  275. ======================
  276. MATHLIBC.NLM
  277. ------------
  278.   Compatibility issues with the existence of MATHLIB.NLM and other third 
  279.   party NLMs have prompted a change to the support NLMs that NetShield loads.
  280.   MATHLIBC.NLM is now used.
  281.  
  282. SHARING VIOLATIONS
  283. ------------------
  284.   If SHARING VIOLATION or ACCESS DENIED messages are experienced try
  285.   loading the MSDOS SHARE.EXE driver from your autoexec.bat. 
  286.   SHARE can be found in the \DOS directory. Otherwise, check the file
  287.   in question for a READ-ONLY file attribute and change it to READ-WRITE. 
  288.  
  289. TO WRITE/PRINT CONFIGURATION DATA
  290. ---------------------------------
  291.   Under CONFIGURATION FILE MANAGEMENT OPTIONS, choosing:
  292.  
  293.   WRITE CONFIGURATION REPORT TO FILE
  294.   or  PRINT CURRENT CONFIGURATION SETTINGS
  295.  
  296.   will write/print NetShields configuration information from the 
  297.   NetShield settings file, VIR$CFG.DAT.
  298.  
  299.   To obtain an accurate configuration report, first choose:
  300.  
  301.    SAVE CONFIGURATION SETTINGS TO FILE  followed by 
  302.    WRITE CONFIGURATION REPORT TO FILE 
  303.    or PRINT CURRENT CONFIGURATION SETTINGS
  304.  
  305. WINDOWS CONSOLE ISSUES
  306. ----------------------
  307.   Although the NetShield Windows Console appears to work correctly in
  308.   Windows 95, McAfee has not fully tested the program in that environment
  309.   and makes no claim that it is 100% compatible with Windows 95.
  310.  
  311. CONFIGURING GLOBAL MHS
  312. ----------------------
  313.   In order for NetShield 2.2 to operate with Global MHS, add the following 
  314.   entry to the NGM.CFG file for the MHS server:
  315.  
  316.     [MGMSMF]
  317.     sender-validation-enabled=FALSE
  318.  
  319. NETWARE SFT-III
  320. ---------------
  321.   On-Access scanning is NOT SUPPORTED on SFT-III 3.11. Due to the nature of
  322.   the 3.11 system it is not possible for NetShield to install the 
  323.   appropriate system hooks. SFT-III 3.11 is a Novell 3.x series product and
  324.   as such will not be further supported by Novell.
  325.  
  326.   On-Access scanning IS FULLY SUPPORTED on SFT-III 4.x.
  327.  
  328.   If executing NETSHLD.NLM on a Novell SFT-III server, be sure to execute
  329.   on the MS engine and NOT on the I/O engine.
  330.  
  331.   NetShields paging feature is not compatible with NetWare SFT-III since 
  332.   SFT-III does not mirror the serial port.
  333.  
  334. USER LIST ON NOVELL 4.01
  335. ------------------------
  336.   Due to some inconsistencies in the Netware 4.01 release NetShield is not
  337.   able to access user lists from servers running this version. It is 
  338.   recommended that you upgrade your systems to any later version of
  339.   Netware.
  340.  
  341. MOVING OUTBOUND FILES TO QUARANTINE DIRECTORY
  342. ---------------------------------------------
  343.   Outbound infected files are NOT moved to the quarantine directory. The 
  344.   files are, however, blocked from being copied. It is recommended that 
  345.   periodic scans of server volumes be performed in order to detect 
  346.   infected files.

  349. Known Bugs in This Release
  350. ==========================
  351. VOLUME SCAN DIALOG
  352. ------------------
  353.   If no volumes on a server have previously selected for scanning the Volume
  354.   Scan Dialog does not default select the first volume in the list. When 
  355.   this occurs the Start Scan button is enabled if it is pressed before a 
  356.   volume has been selected nothing will happen. Be sure to select a volume
  357.   to scan before pressing the Start Scan button.
  358.  
  359. DEFAULT INTERVAL
  360. ----------------
  361.   The default interval for user alarms is not saved when a configuration
  362.   is saved to disk.
  363.  
  364. R/O FILE ATTRIBUTES
  365. -------------------
  366.   NetShield will not load if the files NAMES.DAT and/or SCAN.DAT
  367.   are read only.  If necessary, use the DOS command ATTRIB to 
  368.   remedy the problem. Example:

  370.     attrib -r names.dat
